about
It is time for a musical setting of the Magnificat (a liturgical text originally found in the Gospel of Luke) that highlights not only Mary's historical depiction as a meek and grateful servant but also her hardcore prophetic message, focused on the overturning of the world order as we know it. My goal with this piece was to acknowledge the two images of Mary we often get in history and tradition and to express the the duality that many women, perhaps all people, experience in the way the world depicts us and the way we understand ourselves.
lyrics
My soul magnifies the Lord.
My spirit rejoices in God my savior.
My soul magnifies the Lord,
For God looks on my lowliness with favor.
From now on, generations will call me blessed,
For the Great One has done great things for me.
Holy is the unspeakable name.
And those who fear it will be shown mercy.
From generation to generation, God shows strength in loving arms.
And scatters the proud of the nations in the thoughts of their hearts.
God takes the powerful from their thrones and lifts up the lowly.
God fills the hungry with good things and sends the rich away empty.
God chose Israel remembering mercy, according to the promise of those who came before,
To Sarah, to Abraham, to Hagar, and to their children’s children evermore.

This song was originally written for the Theodicy Jazz Collective, a septet out of New Haven, CT. Thank you for bearing with me, a vocalist who had to render this larger piece on piano in a time crunch!
